Dentistry department

Our department was opened in 1994 at the Samara State Medical University at the initiative of some outstanding medical academicians of the Samara region: Academician of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences A. F. Krasnov; Academician of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences G. P. Kotelnikov and Professor I. P. Balmasova.

Since that time more than 460 highly professional specialists have graduated from the Department. Nowadays there are 270 students at the Dentistry Department.

Training period of a full-time course is 5 years; training period of an extra-mural course is 5 and a half year.

The leading Chair for the Dentistry Department is the Chair of Dentistry. Its Holder is Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor A. V. Shumskiy. The lecturers of the Chair work in five main scientific fields: restorative dentistry, dental surgery, prosthetic dentistry, pediatric dentistry and preventive care of dental diseases.

Main scientific areas of research are aspects of immunology in dentistry, periodontology, cell technologies.

In their second year of studying students start to become acquainted with the foundations of dentistry.  There is a special classroom equipped with anatomical models and dummies on which students sharpen their skills. In advanced years of studying students learn directly at the dental chair in dental care clinics and in dental departments of municipal out-patient clinics. All students can also attend the following facilities: LLC “Medguard”, LLC “Training and treatment center of Professor Shumskiy”, LLC “Dentistry center of Doctor Muzyka”.

Every year students of our Department take an active part in research and practice conferences where they deliver reports and present their own observations and scientific researches.

The lecturers of the Dentistry Chair hold with students a magazine club. The object of it is to analyze and understand international researches, to review methods of treatment of dental diseases in foreign clinics.

To improve their communication skills students use in the study process a video course “Doctor’s advice”. It helps them to build contact with a patient, to define a genuine cause of a disease, to improve their ability to examine a patient; they discuss a diagnosis and a disease prognosis.

Apart from special subjects students improve their knowledge of social science, political science, sanology, information technology, etc.

After 5 years of studying there is the State Final Certification of graduates in accordance with the State educational standard of higher medical education. The graduates are assigned the qualification of a dentist and are issued a diploma. Graduates of our Department take the medical oath in public. This is the expression of loyalty to their profession.
